Synchronizing mastication and deglutition
[Abstract]
We have all encountered adverse muscle function in our practices. It is important that the muscle function be considered from the first time a patient enters a dental office. Orofacial myofunctional therapy, with its goal of synchronizing the orofacial musculature, gives the patient a complete understanding of the movement of the tongue, lips and jaw as well as the correct postural position. What is often overlooked and must be addressed is the incorporation of eating patterns to habituate the correct muscle function. There must be a coordinated effort between the dentist, therapist, patient and parents to obtain the desired result.
