G.V. Blackにより著された『A Work on Operative Dentistry』(1908年)にある、う蝕治療における窩洞形成の基本原則。Blackは当時経験的に行われていた窩洞形成に対し、窩洞形成の術式が単純で簡単になるようある原則を決めた。
（１）First, obtain the required outline form(窩洞外形)
（２）Second, obtain the required resistance form(抵抗形態)
（３）Third, obtain the required retention form(保持形態)
（４）Fourth, obtain the required convenience form(便宜形態)
（５）Fifth, remove any remaining carious dentin(う蝕象牙質の除去)
（６）Sixth, finish the enamel wall(窩縁形態)
（７）Seventh, make the toilet of the cavity(窩洞の清掃)
Blackは，この窩洞の原則とともに予防拡大(extension for prevention)の重要性も示している。また窩洞の大きさに関しては、症例によりさまざまであり、狭い窩洞で目的が達成されればそれでよいとしている。なお現在の教科書などには、このBlackの窩洞の原則として（１），（２），（３），（４）そして（６）の5つが挙げられているが、第一版には上記（１）～（７）が掲げられている。
